Most of us replace our mattress every several years but keep the same pillow far longer than we should. Over time, fill breaks down, support fades, and the pillow that once kept your neck comfortable stops doing its job. The illustration above shows why that matters: when a pillow can't hold its shape, your neck bends out of line with your spine.
Sign 1: It doesn't spring back
Try the fold test on a fiber or down pillow: fold it in half and let go. A pillow in good shape opens back up on its own. If it stays folded, the fill has lost its loft. For foam pillows, look for permanent dents where your head usually rests.
Sign 2: It's lumpy or flat in places
Clumps and thin patches mean uneven support. You'll often notice yourself punching, folding or stacking pillows just to get comfortable — a clear sign the original pillow isn't holding up.
Sign 3: You wake up stiff
Morning stiffness in your neck or shoulders can have many causes, but a worn-out pillow is one of the easiest to fix. If the stiffness eases as the day goes on, your sleep setup is a good place to start.
Sign 4: It's discolored or smells stale
Pillows absorb sweat, skin oils and dust over time. Yellowing and stale smells are signs it has reached the end of its life — even if you use a pillowcase and wash it regularly.
Sign 5: Your sleep position has changed
If you've switched from sleeping on your back to your side — or vice versa — your old pillow may no longer be the right height. Side sleepers usually need a taller, firmer pillow; stomach sleepers usually need a thin, soft one.
Many pillows benefit from being replaced every one to two years. Higher-quality memory foam and latex pillows often last longer, but check them regularly for the signs above.
What to look for in your next pillow
- The right loft for your position — tall enough to keep your head level with your spine.
- Supportive fill — memory foam and latex hold their shape well; shredded foam lets you adjust the height.
- A breathable, removable cover — easier to keep clean and cooler to sleep on.
- A good pillowcase and sheets — breathable cotton helps you stay comfortable all night.
A new pillow is one of the most affordable ways to upgrade your sleep. And if neck or shoulder pain continues even after you've switched, check in with a doctor or physical therapist.
